Werfen Giant Ice Caves

(Eisriesenwelt Werfen)

The cave system that was created many millions of years ago by subterranean water courses, and later conquered by ice, is in every respect unique worldwide: gigantic halls interchange with narrow accesses, small ice curtains follow ice figures of enormous size.

The melt water that trickles in during the spring freezes in the cold cave area and remains frozen on even the hottest summer days. Almost the entire tour section has a ceiling of ice. The cave system stretches for over more than 40km!

As it was hundreds of years ago, lighting is provided by carbide lamps that are distributed among visitors. The tour guide illuminates the especially impressive ice figures with a bright magnesium light. Special attention has always been given to the natural maintenance of this wonder of nature.
